54 Suited in GGPoker AoF: Push or Fold? The Math by Position

54 suited is the hand everyone argues about in All-In or Fold. It looks like trash, yet it has the maximum number of straight-flush boards. The answer depends entirely on your seat — and on the jackpot.

Key takeaways

  • From the CO 54s loses 0.13 BB without the jackpot; at $1/$2 it becomes a push above a jackpot of ~$352.
  • From later seats it gets better: fewer players can call.
  • From the Big Blind it is a call only with a large jackpot — calling has no fold equity.
  • "Always push 54s" and "never push 54s" are both wrong.

Why 54s is a special hand

Against a calling range 54s is usually behind. But it has two things going for it: fold equity when you push, and four straight-flush boards (A-5, 2-6, 3-7, 4-8) — the maximum any hand can have. That puts it in the top jackpot group with 65s, 76s, 87s, 98s, T9s and JTs.

Three players are left to act, so 54s gets called more often and by better hands. Without the jackpot it is a small loss. With a jackpot above the breakeven, push it; below, fold it. At other stakes, scale the breakeven with the big blind: at $0.25/$0.50 it is a quarter of the figure above, at $2/$4 it is double.

How the answer changes by seat

BTN

One fewer player can call, so 54s gets closer to breakeven and a smaller jackpot is enough to make it a push.

SB

Heads-up against the Big Blind, fold equity does most of the work. This is the seat where 54s is at its best.

BB

When you call there is no fold equity. You need roughly 42–44% equity and 54s rarely has it against a pushing range, so the chip loss is much bigger than on a push. Only a large jackpot can make the call worth it.

The lesson beyond 54s

The correct play is a function of seat and jackpot — which is exactly what a push/fold chart with a jackpot input is for. The CO breakdown for 76s, 65s, 53s and 43s is in jackpot strategy.
